Introduction: Commercial LiCoO2 cathodes generally utilize only half of the theoretical capacity. In order to meet the increasing requirements of 3C products for intelligence, long standby, and light weight, more Li+ needs to be extracted by increasing the charging voltage to further improve the energy density of LiCoO2. However, when more than half of Li is taken off from LiCoO2, the change of Co 3d energy band leads to oxygen loss due to the continuous oxidation of O2-, which eventually leads to structural instability and large capacity loss. In order to solve this problem, the effect of two process parameters, namely substrate temperature and sputtering power, on the structure and electrochemical properties of LiCoO2 films was first investigated by RF magnetron sputtering to produce good crystalline films. After optimizing the process parameters, LiCoO2 was modified with Mg/Al co-doping to improve its high voltage cycling stability.
